Poconé Brazil

Poconé was founded by Luiz de Albuquerque de Melo Pereira e Cáceres in 1777, after the discovery of gold. Its first name was Beripoconé, a name taken from an Indigenous tribe that inhabited the region. On January 21, 1781, under orders from Luiz de Albuquerque de Melo Pereira e Cáceres, Antônio José Pinto de Figueiredo created the Founding Act of the São Pedro d’El Rey Festival. The name Beripoconé Festival was not used because the tribe was considered barbarian, derived from “he lived in this place.” On October 25, 1831, a General Decree of the regency government created the municipality, with its current political boundaries, of Vila de Poconé, the latter name being a modification of the original name. In 1831 the municipality was created with the name Vila de Poconé, returning to the old name with hardly any change. In this decree, the municipal boundaries in Mato Grosso were designated for the first time. On July 1, 1863, Poconé was granted city status through a Provincial Law.
